MANSFIELD – The annual Chili & Wing Cook Off will be held after all.
The local favorite will take place June 10 on the Miracle Mile at 1349 Park Avenue West.
Organizers, the Mansfield Shrine Club, had said the family event would not be held this year but after a recent News Journal story, people in the community reached out to offer assistance, according to club president Mike Miranda.
All proceeds of the Chili & Wing Cook Off benefit Shriner’s Hospitals for Children, Miranda said. The event will feature numerous musicians at the Blues Festival, including the Jimi Vincent Band, the Mark May Band and Walk It Off.
The same favorite events and foods will be back, including local chili and wing vendors, ribs, brats, chili dogs, fries and pizza. beer garden and root beer floats, along with chili dog and wing eating contests.
Sponsors thus far are Milliron Auto Parts, Superior Beverage Group, 102.3 FOX, WMAN FM 98.3 News Radio/1400 AM, the Money Saver, Professional Image Uniforms, The Home Depot and Allstate.
Fundraising efforts now are focused on operating a root beer float stand at about a half-dozen area events, enabling members to share with people what they do and to find out if any children in the mid-Ohio area need medical assistance.
Miranda, who joined the Shrine Club four years ago, said the club wants to do more speaking engagements about the club’s mission of helping children.
The Mansfield Shrine Club members are well-known for driving their speedy, little yellow cars in local parades, but the organization’s new president is working to create more awareness on how Shriners help local children.
The club is also focusing on other new ventures.
The Mansfield Shriners Golf Open is planned for Sept. 22 at Westbrook Country Club, along with a root beer stand at Malabar Farm’s Heritage Days this year.
“This year we want to have a good presence at parades and add awareness so we can help more kids and let people know what Shriners Hospitals do for children,” Miranda said . There are 20 Shriners Hospitals across the United States, along with a hospital in Mexico and a hospital in Canada.
Miranda said the Miss Ohio Scholarship Pageant also kicks off on June 10 with contestants at the Richland Mall in Ontario. Autograph signing will take place at 5 p.m.
The Miss Ohio Parade is 2 p.m. June 11. Miss Ohio Week events are scheduled June 10 through June 17. Tickets are $5.
